A different starting point
Good organizations optimize processes.
The best organizations design conversations.
Every interaction influences trust, thoughts, emotion and future behavior.
Approach
A Different Way of Looking at Conversations
Most organizations try to improve conversations by changing what people say. Interaction by Design starts somewhere else. It starts by changing how people see the interaction itself.
Three core insights
01
The problem is rarely the real problem.
We look beyond the practical issue and focus on the impact it has on the person experiencing it.
Empathy isn’t about understanding the problem. It’s about understanding the impact of the problem.
02
Simplicity beats complexity.
We don’t add more scripts, rules or complicated models.
We give people a simple way to make better decisions in real conversations.
03
Designed for real life.
Interactions are unpredictable.
That is why people need a framework that helps them respond to what matters in the moment, not memorize fixed responses.
about sustainability
Interaction by Design is built on a simple principle: interactions can create value for one side, but they can only become sustainable when they benefit every side.
the customer.
the employee.
the business.

Solutions
Most organizations know what kind of customer experience they want to create.
But customers don’t experience a promise on a slide.
They experience it in a conversation.
Interaction by Design helps organizations translate their customer experience vision, brand promise and values into practical interaction behavior — so the experience they want to create becomes visible in what people actually do.

ABOUT
WHY INTERACTION BY DESIGN EXISTS
I created it because, after more than twenty years in customer contact, I could no longer ignore the same pattern.
The Pattern
Working across different industries, countries and cultures—and since 2012 as a member of The House of Contact Centers—I saw organizations making significant investments in technology, processes and performance measurement. Communication training often came later, usually in response to recurring requests from the business. I know that world well because, for many years, I was the trainer standing in front of those groups.
The Turning Point
The workshops were often well received. People left inspired. But too often, the impact faded after a few weeks.
That realization changed the way I looked at my own profession.
The more I worked with organizations, the more I realized that great conversations don’t depend on frontline employees alone. They are shaped by leadership, coaching, culture and the systems surrounding them. The interaction itself could never improve in isolation.
The Insight
At the same time, I noticed something else.
Leaders regularly spoke about empathy, listening and making conversations more personal. But when I asked what those concepts actually looked like in practice, the answers were often surprisingly vague.
That’s when I realized people didn’t need more scripts or more rules. They needed a simple way to understand what another person actually needs from an interaction.
That insight became the foundation of Interaction by Design.

The Work Today
Today, my work is no longer limited to communication training. I help organizations create lasting behavioral and organizational change by designing the conditions in which better conversations become the natural outcome.
The ideas that eventually became Interaction by Design were first put into practice in large-scale transformation programs. One of those programs, delivered together with The House of Contact Centers for bpost, received the Belgian Customer Contact Award.
But the recognition I’m most proud of doesn’t come from an award. It comes from seeing organizations move beyond teaching communication skills to building environments where great conversations can happen every day.

I have always been fascinated by small moments that stay with you.
That is probably why I can get lost in an ABBA song, in the everyday precision of Japan, or in the ocean while diving. A melody that sounds simple but is built with absurd craft. A small gesture that changes the feeling of a place. A reef full of life moving on its own terms, reminding you to slow down and stop feeling so important.
They may seem unrelated, but for me they point to the same idea: the small things are not decoration. They are the experience.
How something is said. The timing of a gesture. The detail someone notices or misses. The feeling that something is right before you can explain why.
I don’t believe happiness is mostly decided by a few big moments. Life is built from all the small ones. Added together, they decide how a day felt, how a place felt, how a relationship felt — and maybe, in the end, life altogether.
